Freeze Tips
Living in Texas means winter can surprise you. Here's how to protect your pipes before the next hard freeze.
Before the freeze
- Disconnect garden hoses and cover outdoor spigots with insulated freeze caps.
- Wrap exposed pipes — especially in attics, garages, and along exterior walls — with pipe insulation.
- Locate your main water shut-off valve so you can stop a leak fast if a pipe bursts.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to let warm air reach the pipes.
During the freeze
- Let interior faucets drip slowly. Moving water resists freezing.
- Keep your thermostat at a consistent temperature, day and night.
- If you leave town, set the heat no lower than 55°F and shut off the main water supply.
If a pipe freezes
- Shut off the main water valve immediately.
- Open the affected faucet to relieve pressure as the pipe thaws.
- Thaw slowly with a hair dryer — never an open flame.
