Freeze Tips

Living in Texas means winter can surprise you. Here's how to protect your pipes before the next hard freeze.

Before the freeze

  • Disconnect garden hoses and cover outdoor spigots with insulated freeze caps.
  • Wrap exposed pipes — especially in attics, garages, and along exterior walls — with pipe insulation.
  • Locate your main water shut-off valve so you can stop a leak fast if a pipe bursts.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to let warm air reach the pipes.

During the freeze

  • Let interior faucets drip slowly. Moving water resists freezing.
  • Keep your thermostat at a consistent temperature, day and night.
  • If you leave town, set the heat no lower than 55°F and shut off the main water supply.

If a pipe freezes

  • Shut off the main water valve immediately.
  • Open the affected faucet to relieve pressure as the pipe thaws.
  • Thaw slowly with a hair dryer — never an open flame.
  • Call us at 713-352-1919. We dispatch fast.
